Interview Clothing Dos and Do Nots
- Clothing: Invest in a well-made, tailored suit, a quality pair of shoes, and matching belt. These items will do wonders for you throughout your career and even come in handy when you are off the clock!
Pro tips for choosing clothing:
- Research the company’s dress code and learn how to decode it. A good rule of thumb is to aim to be dressed one step above a company’s everyday dress code for an interview. If they dress business casual, you should wear a suit and tie. Even if you are applying for a position for which you will wear flip flops and jean shorts, you should still dress at least business casual for the interview.
- Interviews should be considered similar to a special occasion. For the most casual interview, consider khakis with a tucked in button up or polo shirt, nice shoes, and a matching belt.
- Accessories:Â Leave the crazy socks at home. Although a fun pair of socks can be a great way to jazz up ordinary business attire, they are best left home (at least until you have the job).
- Hair:Â Arrive well groomed. Short, conservative haircuts are considered standard for a business environment. If you have long hair or a beard, neatly arrange hair and trim your beard.
- Cologne:Â Go cologne-free. While you want to prevent body odor due to high nerves during an interview, use deodorant instead of masking odors with cologne. Many people are sensitive to fragrances, which could distract from you during your interview.
